Happy Gardening New Year 2012

Cally Creates New Year Message (click to see in sharp focus)

My New Year wish for all you gardener's in 2012. The foliage in the photo is Oxalis Sunset, an annual which I've managed to keep alive in the house from cuttings I took in late Summer/early Autumn. It's such a great plant, like foliar sunshine. I plan to take more cuttings this month from the bits I've overwintered so that I'll have lots of it to plant out in April.

Have any of you managed to over-winter plants that you normally think of as annuals? I'd love to hear which plants do well. Mine were in the house in a room that wavers between 10 and 14 degrees centigrade in an East window with occasion daylight bulb use on dull days. But I've also noticed that the mild winter has allowed numerous annuals to carry on growing outside, most noticeable the Osteospermums which are twice their Summer height - I'll need to get cuttings from them because I don't believe for a moment that cold isn't coming. You can view all my plantings of 2011 and indeed 2012 here and I'd love to see others add their gardens too.

Cally,
Thanks for visiting my blog.

The best thing to do while watering lavender to make sure you are not over watering them is not to water them regularly (since lavender is a drought plant). Touch the soil under the cutting, if it feels dry to your touch then you can water it.

And as for the link you have posted I shall definitely check it.

Thanks for the tips, this year's batch seem to be doing better, I think the problem came when we had so much heavy rain just after they were planted out. The ones that stayed in pots were happier, presumably because they drained and dried out more quickly.

I wish I could give you my sunshine (well, a few hours a week of it!). Thanks for the nice wish!

Desert Dweller - we definitely could each do with a weather exchange from time to time.

John - I hope I have a better gardening year worth following for you.

Hi Cally, thx for visiting my blog. Btw, yours is totally stylish. Tres design ! ;)

I love oxyalis, it's so pretty. I must say I don't overwinter many annuals although some are definitely worth it. Tender grasses, in my case.

About Folia - I already have an account but don't really use it. (Btw, your sidebar link opens the Folia page but doesn't link to your account. I did a quick search for Cally but didn't find any from UK).

ps. About your pic being out of focus - Blogger uses presets for pic sizes. If you enlarge a pic after initially posting it a certain size, it very often becomes a stretched (thus, blurry) version of the previous setting. A quick fix to this is deleting the preset. That can be done by editing your post in html mode and deleting the (in this case) "s400/" portion of the image's source (src) code. Try it.

(Sorry if you get 2 of these. My first comment seems to have vanished).

Lisa, I must pop to your blog.

Miss M - Hi again, thanks for the comment, esp the blogger image tips. That particular photo was actually reduced rather than enlarged which has never presented a problem before, but it's always good to learn about workarounds for getting images right when things behave oddly.

Miss M - I checked the Folia link and from my end it goes straight to my Folia page - CDfolia, did you maybe get that page and think it wasn't mine because it didn't say Cally? Hope that's the reason and not that my link doesn't work for other people.
